Why does EQ2 run like a turd? My PC is at the very least 4x better then the one I used at launch, yet it lags on balanced or performance setting when theres 5 npc's on the screen at once! Thats just as bad a back when!
Its a fresh install of Win7 64bit, latest ATI and other drivers, running without any security settings (to test), No other background programs running.
Can't seem to find anything decent on the forum, everyone shouting "you should turn off the new shader", but it is off!
Any tips are appreciated!!

what pc are u running on?
is it dual core? quad core? have u checked the box so it uses more then one core?
what sort of quality are u running at extreme performance or?

you need to download some more ram
:uglystupid:

E8400, 3Ghz Core2Duo (dual core, options box is checked to use multiple cores)
4GB Ram, (damn, forgot which type and since its a fresh install no CPU-Z yet) Its got shiny lights on it to show its usage and its not being used 100%.
Sapphire 4850x2 2GB videocard with latest official ATI drivers.
7200rpm 1TB HDD
Onboard 5.1 sound (SupremeFX II by ASUS, lol)
and Win 7, 64bit.
Did I miss an important component? Don't need the accesoires right? :P
Its running Dragon Age in all its gory glory for hours like a charm! (ok so the videocard fans start making a hella noise, but still) :tickedoff:
Since I have no other classification I'll use the windows one:
Processor: 6,5 / RAM 6,7 / Graphics: 7,3 / HDD 5,9
I tried running EQ2 in any mode from Extreme? Quality to Performance, which was the same setting I used on the "old" one.
Only things I can think of is more RAM (no room) or maybe download and install some specific motherboard/sound drivers.

EQ2 is a bag o' crap as far as making use of hardware is concerned.
I run a 2-core 3GHz processor, 8GB memory, and a GeForce 9800 GTX. The game client just sits one core at 100% most of the time, with the other doing very little, and the graphics card barely doing any work whatsoever.
If I run the new shader, the graphics card gets to do a bit more work, it seems, and things do look prettier, but it doesn't seem to take any significant load off the processor, sadly.
This is all on WinXP 64-bit, and it's trimmed down about as lean as I can get it.
From what I can tell, there's a reluctance within SOE to do any kind of major overhaul to the engine, due to both the development cost that would have to go in to it, as well as the huge support overhead when, in all likelihood, a portion of the user base would experience problems with introducing a major code change.
I am friends with the lead programmer on EQ2, and perhaps at Fan Faire will be a good opportunity for me to to pin him down for a chat about it.
In summary, all I can say is that there's no way I've come across to raid on extreme quality! I run very high performance for grouping, extreme performance for raiding, and only use extreme quality when I'm wandering around looking at the prettyness of new content... except the guild hall!
Never has updating any drivers or whatnot had any effect on the performance from my perspective.
Other games look extremely nice on my setup though!
