Amazing feat of graphics programming
« on: 19. October 2007, 13:04:13 (01:04 PM) »

For those interesting in amazing graphics programming abilities, take a look at this graphics and sound demo. Then consider that the whole thing is only 180kb! This demo, Debris by farbrausch, won 1st place in the Breakpoint 2007 demo competition in the PC category.

You can download it from this page: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=30244

PS: It takes a while to start up, on my laptop I had to use 'Normal' textures for it run reasonably smooth.

That is quite a respectable site in the demo scene, so I would be surprised if there was a virus in it. The .exe uses a lot of compression techniques to make it that small. It might be that AVG is reporting a false positive, but I can't guarantee that of course :)

EDIT: Just noticed that there are over 600 comments on that page, but nobody else mentions a virus.

Thanks, I tend to trust AVG because it's the only antivirus that kept my computer that safe and without any bother for so long :P

Win32/NSAnti detected again, here is a description of that file I found on the web:

Win32/NSAnti is a heuristic detection that may proactively detect new malware for the Win32 platform which has been packed with NSAnti.

It say the risk is really low... *shrug*

Yeah, thats a false hit. It says it 'may detect'. The program has been compressed, and virus's are usually compressed so AVG thinks might be a virus too.

64k was back in the day ;). There still are those categories, but they're not called demos, they're called intros. The category the 180k one was entered into actually has a 64MB limit.

Here is another demo, 26MB big, it won the Assembly 2007 demo party. A bit more artistic:

Damn, thats some wicked cool stuff, looks amazing in Hi-Res!! :D
I really dig the camera work in that first vid.
The second vid starts out a bit odd, but its seriously wicked too, not the best 3d ever, but their other stuff rocks. Also, that relief thingie, that looks like reflections on copper?... just wow...

Still LOVE the music.
sorry, the youtube vid isn't as "In sync" as the original was. Also, its missing the last bit of the demo :(

Oh yeah, I remember Future Crew and their Second Reality demo :) You can download Second Reality from here: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=63 , but you will most likely need to run it in a dosbox since it uses protected mode memory.

They were an inspiration to me and two other high school friends to enter the local South African demo competition, called Dexterity. We won 2nd place in it in 1994 with our demo called Kataklism. If you want to have a laugh, you can download that from http://www.nirenstein.com/e107/page.php?15 It will still run under windows, but it was designed to run on a 386 with VGA.
