It advice needed
« on: 13. November 2006, 19:09:44 (07:09 PM) »

First of all for those that don't know me,I've played EQ1 with a lot of people that are in this guild so pardon me for intruding.
I'll try to keep it short.

I've been fired a couple of months ago and although I have a new job I want to study IT because I think I will have more fun doing work in that line.
However I don't know wich way to go/what to study and therefore I'd like to ask people who are in the line of business if they can give me any advice.
Is it best to go MSCA>MSCE or should I go for a bachelor education or.....????
As of this moment I don't have a clear view on wich way to go,networking or programming because I think those are basicly the 2 directions I'd like to go in (No graphic design or management)

Any comments/advice would be greatly aprreciated

Thanks,

Ray(Crayno)

P.S.  :icon_salut: to all you addicts outthere  ;)

Hello Crayno!

Nice to hear from you ( and twiche on the same day  ;) )

I dont know exactly what a bachelor study is, but it sounds more solid than those MS courses.

And choosing between programming and networking baffles me a bit, because from my point of view you have to have a solid foundation in programming.

But both areas are vast and you may find topics of interrest you will be able to specialize within. Alas, a lot more topics you didnt mention (databases, operating systems, etc. ae they included in the above or aren't they offered ?)

Hi Crayno,

good to hear from you again :)

I don't know how deep you are allready in the IT-stuff, so I can only give some basic comments ;) I have to agree with Cual, the bachelor thingie sounds more solid than the MS one. I don't  say the MS stuff is bad, but I think it is more something like a specilization. I think it is always a good idea to know something of the basic stuff, before you go for a specialization or any specific tools.
For example, if you are interested in databases to learn/know something about relational databases before you "only" learn something about the MS-stuff (Access, FoxPro, SQL-Server...). Or if you want to program to know the principles of object-orientation before you go for Visual Basic, C++ or Java. Last thing is from my own experience for example, it doesn't help at all when you try to go for object orientation without knowing the ideas. Some people still produce code in the procedural aspects like old plain C or Pascal when they are working with Java. Their programs will still work, but they won't get to use any of the benefits of an OO orientated language then. And these programs are usually much more difficult to maintain...

Another point to consider may be the prospects on getting a job in specific areas afterwards. And are you going to study while keeping your old job (tough to do both I assume) or would you quit that and concentrate on your learnings (much less income then I assume)? And having the opportunity to work on an IT-project in a team while studying (due to the study itself or some extra-work) would help too if you haven't done that allready...

Cheers,
Kola

While I agree that a bachelor might be more solid than any MS certification (or any other certification, for that matter), it's also a much longer path toward a job in IT (4 years vs several months, basically). Basically, to get a (hands-on) job in IT, you need either experience or a recent certification. I haven't completed any 'real' higher education, only going by on experience and my certifications ( bunch of Novell certs [ (M)CNE, CDE, working on CLP ], Cisco CCNA) and i'm doing quite well. I am considering getting some kind of degree, but to me that's more like icing on the cake (and to possibly open up some other options for the next 30 years or so)

And choosing between programming and networking baffles me a bit, because from my point of view you have to have a solid foundation in programming.

If I understand this statement correctly, I dont agree with it at all. I know a lot of people who think programming is something you do to a VCR, yet they make excellect (Technical) Consultants, Sysadmins or whatever (all pretty heavy technical functions).

I don't have any advice, I don't work in IT.

But, it's good to hear from you again and I hope you're keeping well.  O0

Thanks for the replies and it's definately nice to chat with you again.
I don't know much about IT and I have no experience so I need a starting point first and see wich direction to go along the way.
Thanks to Ilenya and some others I think I have an idea wich path to follow.
But to answer your further questions:
I'm going to keep my job for now until I am 100% sure that IT is the way I want to go unless I get the opportunity to work and study at the same time. And that's unlikely without experience or at least some knowledge/eductaion.
If I'm 100% sure I want to go for IT then I would be able to study full time for a couple of months if needed.
And since I will be 41 in March time is somewhat of an issue for me  :icon_bigsmurf:
