DirectX 10.1 makes DirectX 10 cards obsolete
« on: 14. August 2007, 10:34:55 (10:34 AM) »

I found an 'interesting' article for those with DX10 cards, or thinking of buying one.

Basically, Microsoft is releasing DX10.1 soon, and existing DX10 cards (such as the Nvidia 8800) won't work with the new DX10.1 features due to the way DX10 and up has been designed. This was expected with new version of DX, such as DX11, but I wasn't expecting this to happen so soon...

And to make matters worse, it's supposedly going to be quite easy to 'upgrade' a game to DX10.1:
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=41643

It's unclear if there will be any attempts at retaining backward compatibility, so if you have a DX10(.0) card, you're likely screwed even before the first DX10 game hits the market. Way to go, Microsoft.

Same, I have a £450 880GTX that I've had for a couple months, and will be gutted if it's not compatible when DX10 games start to ship. In reality, it should not affect me much as I only really play EQ2, and MMOGs in general dont seem to upgrade their graphics much from launch.

This is a standard thing with Microsoft... the first shipping version of any product is really 'open beta', and early adopters have some pain to live through before things stabilise. I kinda knew this when I got my card, so cant complain too much... and I certainly could not run this monitor on a lesser card, so it's all good, heh. :)

There are so few DX10 games coming out soon anyway, it'll probably be 2012 by the time DX10.1 games emerge!

I ordered an 8800 gtx today for £330- prices have already been slashed. I don't have vista so i won't even be able to use DX10 anyway heh.

I'm fairly sure all DX10.1 games will be DX10 compatible anyway- most if not all forthcoming DX10 games are going to be DX9 compatible.

Whatever the case I got a fooking nice card being delivered tomorrow  ;D

I am not about to update to Vista anytime soon so I am hoping this won't become an issue. Most game makers aren't that up to date with things.

Yeah, I agree, a bit of an exaggeration, but that Microsoft employee is very careful in choosing his words.

It still comes down to the fact that if there is a DX10.1 game you won't be able to play that game with your DX10 card because the standard requires the hardware to include all the features. Its not like DX9 where the application can query the hardware to find out which features are available and then adjust accordingly.

In essence, he is saying that a developer has the choice of making a DX10.1 game, meaning that DX10 cards can't play it. So why would a developer do that if they know DX10 guys can't use it? He probably won't.. so then what is the point of releasing DX10.1 in the first place if nobody is going to use it?

The comment at the end of that article sums it up quite nicely:

"To get this straight - DirectX10.1 will support my DX10 graphics card, but my DX10 graphics card will not support DX10.1.
*sigh*
MS hasn't 'written off' any fears - they have simply said 'it's not a spade, it's a pointy ended shovel intended for digging!'. All you early adopters out there, yes your card is now obsolete."

If there aren't any DX10.0 games out right now, and the first ones will only be coming out in a few months (or maybe even longer), why would developers bother keeping things compatible with DX10.0? There's relatively very few DX10 cards out there right now, so there's not a lot of people getting screwed now.

No matter how you spin this, I think this makes Microsoft look pretty bad and it makes the entire construction look bad (where Microsoft essentially determines which features a piece of hardware should have). In the long run though, this may turn out for the better for everyone, when more game designers go 'screw DirectX, I'll do OpenGL instead'. This seems a likely direction for game devs anyway, since OpenGL is the only way to go if you want crossplatform (Mac and Linux come to mind)

I personally think the sooner developers start to think multi platform the better i personally hate the way microsoft seems to control and dictate what other companies produce whether it be games or other software

I think the use of the word "obsolete" is overly dramatic not to mention total sensationlism.

While it's true in a literal sense that current Dx10 hardware will be obsolete in as much as it won't perform the new features it's also true that the new features need to be specifically coded for and it would appear that most if not all game developers would not expect to actual implement these features into their software. That my card will be unable to perform a function it's unlikely any game will ever implement doesn't really worry unduly.

By the time any actual games appear that require these functions to run most will have already upgraded their video cards anyway.

While I would agree that it's quite poor how Microsoft have organised Dx10 I think far too much has been made of this, there's a significant number of both press and public that would have you believe that Vista will break into your house, rape your wife, beath up your children, kill your dog and have a healthy dump in your fish tank.

I'm far more interested in the rumored rewriting of the way Vista and Dx10 handle sound that will require a brand new DRM driver set but will allow 3d sound close to that enjoyed easily in XP on current hardware.
