Anyone Use Windows 7?
« on: 25. October 2009, 11:54:46 (11:54 AM) »

Evening Lovelies. Quite stumped with this one, and since you're the cleverest lot I know maybe you can help.

I installed Windows 7 yesterday on my main PC and it works fine, but for some reason Windows Live Messenger won't sign in. It loads up fine, but as soon as it logs you in it crashes out.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, running it in all of the compatibility modes on the list, downloading a clean install and upgrading from an older version, deleting the folder in Program Files before reinstalling it, running it without any Anti-Viruses or Firewalls and all come with the same issue.

I can't find anything on Google about it that leads me to a solution either, so i'm quite stuck!

I'll post the error code next time it gives me one.

Ed: This issue only happens with WLM Version 9, Version 8.1 runs fine.

speaking of windows 7...students who have not bought it yet should try http://www.win741.com/...there's an offer for 30$... (there's links for different countries at the bottom of the page) You have to be a student to be able to get one but it's still pretty cheap.

Have had 2 versions of Windows 7 now both the release candidate before it was released and now full release.

Have not experienced this on either  :-\

The only thing I did notice in the start menu was that there is, in the Getting Started submenu, a Windows Live Essentials Link.  I did click this and all it does is take to you a Live page which I assumed is just the standard page.  I have installed manually and from that link and both have installed ok so maybe that has nothing to do with your problem.

The only problem I have noticed from time to time is that if I don't sign in straight away after boot, WLM occasionally does not want to sign complaining about some entries in my host file but that is crap.  After a reboot, it works again.

Sorry, not really helping with your problems but an idea of the oddities that have happened with it for me.

The exchange rate disparity is really annoying - $30 in the US but $49 in the UK.  Still a good price I guess if you are eligible.

Btw...I was thinking about maybe switching to 64bits, is there still a lot of compatibility problems with programs or is it rare enough for me not to mind it?

I've been running Windows 7 64 bit since the beta came out.

There was some compatibility issues right at the start, specifically with antivirus and DVD emulation software, but those have all been sorted out since the release of RC1.

No problems so far and I'm happily running Windows 7 64bit on a quad core with 8GB of ram.

(Yes I know I have the occasional crash, but that's not Windows' fault - its a cooling problem ;-) )

Thanks :) I just got my new comp and was wondering what to install on it. It's a phenom x2 3.1Ghz with 2x2gig ram DDR3 DIMM 1330 and a nice Radeon HD 4850 with 1go RAM...so I thought it was time to somehow upgrade to 64 if there wasn't trouble with it :P

If you are 'only' putting in 4Gb ram, there is little point in using 64 bit. I know it's fashionable to have 'more bits', but the main benefit of any 64 bit OS is it's ability to address more than 4Gb physical memory. It really only starts making sense at 8Gb plus.

There's actually a minor performance hit for 64 bit compared to 32, at a low arithmetic and memory operation level, so I'd say either buy 8Gb ram or stick with 32 bits for now.

The problem is, with 32bit you only have 3Gb RAM at max, not 4Gb. Because devices (most notably, video card) are also mapped to same address space.

Aye right now for a 32 bits I have 5 go ram (4 + 1 from my video card) so going to 64 would make me gain 1...also I won't need to fully reinstall everything if I upgrade my ram. I will most likely not see an extreme difference for now but I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't end up with fucked up drivers and programs were I to directly go to 64

Thats why I'm running 64bit, to address 8GB, and I only have 8GB so I can run lots of VM's at the same time for various projects.

Haly's PC 'only' has 4GB of ram, but I also installed it with 64bit Windows 7 - that way I only need to have one set of drivers available for the two machines :)

This is certainly true of 32-bit binaries running on 64-bit Windows at present.  Maybe SOE will provide us with 64-bit builds soon...  meh, as if.

Yay!  That is the best choice.

That was the next thing for me to try once I got sick of trying random things in the hopes they work. I only ever used Trillian once and that was about 6 years ago. Is it any good now?
