The giraffe and the mouse
« on: 04. August 2008, 18:00:07 (06:00 PM) »

Someone sent me this joke in Afrikaans.. I'll do my best to translate:

A giraffe is having a chat with a mouse.

The giraffe says, boasting, "It is such a pleasure having a long neck like mine. During meals I can savour each bite the whole time it travels down to my stomache. And in the summer, it is so refreshing to drink something cold and feel it cool down my whole body as it flows down my neck..."

And the mouse replies, "You've never puked?"

Quote
'n Kameelperd chat met 'n muis. "Dis té héérlik om so 'n lang nek te hê!

Met etes kan ek elke happie geniet die heelpad wat hy op pad is maag toe en

in die somer is dit so verfrissend om ietsie koud te drink - die koel vog

verkwik my hele lyf terwyl dit in my keel afvloei..."

Die muis vra: "Al ooit gekots??"

:) Funy to read it in Afrikaans, so close to old dutch. The only thing I would not have figured out is "kameelperd" for a giraffe. I would have thought it was "kameelpaard" in dutch and that would not make sense as that is translated as camelhorse.  :D

The literal translation of kameelperd from Afrikaans to English is in fact camel-horse.

EDIT: I had to go look it up, but eventually found the origin of the Afrikaans name.

The zoological name for a giraffe is Giraffa Camelopardalis which means camel with a leopard-like coat. The Afrikaans name kameelperd is a corruption of this zoological name.
